FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q:
How long have you been painting custom designs?
A:
I started pinstriping in 11th grade at North High School in North St. Paul. Somehow word got out that I could make regular refrigerators look really cool and suddenly I was in business. That was forty-one years ago.
Q:
What was the first car you customized?
A:
In 1978 I painted a 1941 Willys at the Street Rod Nationals.
Q:
Are you classically trained or did you learn this on your own?
A:
Both. It started with passion and inspiration from some of the masters such as Von Dutch, Ed Roth, and HR Giger. At the same time, I pursued this passion at the School of Associated Arts, which became the College of Visual Arts, where I earned a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree.
Q:
How are you different than others out there?
A:
Dave Bell gave me an eye for unique color combinations, the detail and precision that I demand from myself on every piece. But really, most times I think I've only done my job if your eyes bleed when you see the finished work.
Q:
What type of custom painting do you do?
A:
Old school custom pinstriping, gold leaf and airbrushing. Plus complete custom painting with metallics, pearls, candy, iridescents, and even chameleons.
Q:
Do you make appearances at any of the big shows or rallies?
A:
I'm a featured painter at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the MSRA Back to the 50s show, the Patriot Ride and the Flood Run.
Q:
Has your work won any awards?
A:
Definitely. Cars and motorcycles I've customized have won multiple "Best in Shows" around the country. The most memorable are the Rat Fink Funny Car that won "Best Appearing Car" at the NHRA, and winning "First Place - Best Pinstriping" at the GSTA Street Rod & Customs Spectacular.
Q:
How long does the average job take?
A:
For pinstriping, on average, about 4 hours. For airbrushing it varies greatly from a week to a month or more. It's really best to contact me to talk the project through to get an idea of what will be involved.

What's the craziest thing you've ever painted?
A:
I carefully painted a flame job on a turtle. The little fella looked very cool and he sported that paint for a year or more.
Q:
What would most people be surprised to learn about you?
A:
Coffee. I have to have it. I've got a very steady hand, but without my coffee I can get a little shaky.
